Loke: Ban on NGVs Effective July 2025

Safety Concerns Lead to Ban

KUALA LUMPUR: Anthony Loke announced that all natural gas vehicles (NGVs) will be banned from registration and use on Malaysian roads starting July 1, 2025. The Cabinet, motivated by safety concerns for NGV users and other motorists, made this decision on October 2. In line with this policy, PETRONAS will begin immediately phasing out NGV fuel sales, aiming for full cessation by July 1, 2025.

Support for NGV Owners to Transition to Petrol

Loke assured that eligible NGV owners would receive financial assistance to switch to petrol vehicles. A RM3,000 voucher will be provided to qualifying owners within 30 days of application approval. Applications for this support will close on December 31, 2024, for fully NGV-operated taxis and vehicles. For dual-fuel vehicles, applications will be accepted until April 30, 2025, as these vehicles must be petrol-operated by July 1. Currently, Malaysia has 9,509 NGV taxis, 32,137 private NGVs, 2,150 natural gas-powered buses and trucks, and 587 NGVs used in machinery.
