Deadly Shooting in Villahermosa
Early Sunday morning, a shooting at a bar in Villahermosa, Tabasco, left six dead and five injured. Public Safety Secretary Omar García Harfuch stated that federal authorities are working with local officials to investigate.
Targeted Attack
State deputy prosecutor Gilberto Melquiades said the gunmen entered the bar targeting a specific individual, with stray bullets hitting others nearby. An investigation is ongoing to determine the motive.
No Arrests or Motive Confirmed
No arrests have been made, and videos online show patrons fleeing while some remained to help victims. The attack is part of increasing violence tied to drug trafficking and gang conflicts in the region.
A Broader Context of Violence
This attack adds to Mexico’s growing violence, with over 450,000 homicides since 2006. Earlier this month, a similar bar shooting in Querétaro killed 10 people.
Presidential Response to Violence
President Christina Sheinbaum, Mexico’s first female president, is tackling crime with social policies and intelligence improvements, avoiding direct confrontation with cartels while seeking long-term solutions.
