Authorities Begin Investigation into Cat Deaths at UM
KUALA LUMPUR: A Universiti Malaya (UM) lecturer, several students, and an animal welfare advocate are among the seven individuals questioned by authorities regarding a series of cat deaths on campus.
City police chief Datuk Rusdi Mohd Isa stated that the remains of a cat, submitted by the activist on Dec 21, have been sent to a veterinary lab for examination and post-mortem.
Second Cat Found and Examination Scheduled
“Another cat’s carcass, found on Dec 25 near the Faculty of Sports and Exercise Science parking lot, has also been forwarded for a similar process. The autopsies are scheduled for Dec 27,” he explained in a statement on Dec 26.
Animal Rights Group Urges Comprehensive Review
Kelab Kucing Malaysia, through its president Khalid Rashid, urged investigators to conduct a comprehensive review of the incident, potentially with input from specialists.
Stray Dogs Blamed for Cat Deaths
However, police clarified that CCTV footage from Dec 22 revealed stray dogs attacking the cats, and the Department of Veterinary Services confirmed that the injuries aligned with wild dog attacks.
