Surge in Child Abuse Cases Reported in 2024

Introduction to the Issue

KUALA LUMPUR: The Women, Family and Community Ministry has reported a concerning surge in child abuse cases, with 2,240 incidents recorded from January to August 2024. The number reflects the ongoing challenge the government faces in tackling child abuse in the country.

Comparison with 2023 Figures

In comparison to last year, 2023 saw a total of 4,469 cases of child abuse. This shows a slight reduction, yet the numbers remain alarmingly high, pointing to the need for continued vigilance and prevention efforts.

Types of Abuse Recorded

The recorded cases of child abuse are categorized into three main forms: physical, sexual, and emotional abuse. According to the report, abuse cases affecting girls are twice as frequent as those affecting boys. Girls are disproportionately affected by sexual and emotional abuse.

Disparity Between Genders

The statistics reveal a significant difference in the rates of sexual abuse between genders. In 2023, 2,328 cases of sexual abuse were reported against girls, compared to just 195 cases involving boys. The 2024 figures, although slightly lower, continue to reflect this troubling gender gap.

Government’s Response

The Ministry emphasizes the seriousness with which the government is approaching these crimes. Various protective laws, such as the Child Act 2001, the Sexual Offenses Against Children Act 2017, and the Care Centers Act 1993, are in place to safeguard children’s rights and ensure justice for victims.

Call for Collaborative Action

Minister Nancy Shukri stresses that the responsibility of addressing child abuse does not lie with the government alone. The cooperation of individuals, communities, NGOs, and the private sector is essential to prevent these crimes and protect children from harm.
