Warning Issued for Malaysians Traveling to Southern Thailand
BANGKOK: The Malaysian Consulate in Southern Thailand has recommended that Malaysians reconsider any immediate travel plans to the region due to severe flooding caused by prolonged heavy rain.
Statement from Consul General
Malaysian Consul General in Songkhla, Ahmad Fahmi Ahmad Sarkawi, issued a statement on Thursday (Nov 29), urging caution for those needing to travel during this period. “Continuous downpours have resulted in extensive flooding, leading to mass evacuations in many parts of southern Thailand,” he said.
Advice for Malaysians in Southern Thailand
He also encouraged Malaysians already in the region to stay alert, follow local weather updates, and adhere to advice from local authorities. “Safety should be the top priority for Malaysians in Southern Thailand. Stay vigilant and look out for each other. Those requiring assistance may contact the consulate at +6693-6570707,” Ahmad Fahmi added.
Floods Impacting Thousands
Meanwhile, Thailand’s Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation (DDPM) reported that floods have affected seven provinces, including Surat Thani, Nakhon Si Thammarat, and Songkhla, displacing over 136,000 households across 50 districts and nearly 2,000 villages.
Relief and Support Efforts
The DDPM has deployed resources such as water pumps, boats, and rescue helicopters to aid in evacuation and relief efforts. Volunteer groups like the “Guardian Team” are also assisting those impacted, while authorities assess damages to provide financial support.
