

Introduction: Google’s US$2 Billion Investment in Malaysia
KUALA LUMPUR – Google has praised Malaysia’s approach towards building an advanced artificial intelligence (AI) infrastructure, highlighting the strategic vision laid out under Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim’s leadership. The tech giant recently made a significant US$2 billion (RM8.93 billion) investment in Malaysia.
Google’s Investment and Commitment to AI in Malaysia

Karan Bhatia, Google’s Vice President of Government Affairs and Public Policy, spoke at the APEC Summit in Peru, emphasizing that this proactive infrastructure planning prompted Google to commit US$2 billion towards the establishment of a state-of-the-art data centre in Malaysia.
In May 2024, Google revealed its plan to invest US$2 billion in the country, which will include a data centre and the launch of a Google Cloud region. This project aims to meet the rising demand for cloud services globally and locally. Additionally, Google will support AI literacy programs aimed at both students and educators. This investment is expected to generate an economic impact of more than US$3.2 billion (RM14.29 billion) and create 26,500 jobs by 2030.
Microsoft’s Endorsement of Malaysia’s National AI Roadmap
Meanwhile, Microsoft’s Vice President of Data and AI, Zia Mansoor, also commended Malaysia’s National AI Roadmap, calling it a comprehensive approach to both AI infrastructure and the upskilling of the local workforce. He expressed his approval during the APEC CEO Summit in Peru 2024.
“It’s a well-rounded plan, focusing on infrastructure development and the essential upskilling of all Malaysians in AI technology,” Mansoor said. The roadmap also establishes a government AI Centre of Excellence, a key initiative for applying AI within the public sector.
Prime Minister Anwar’s Vision for AI and Future Investments
On November 15, Prime Minister Anwar met with Google in Peru’s capital, discussing advancements in AI and data centres. He stressed the importance of fortifying AI ecosystems, particularly with regard to preventing data leaks and malicious exploitation. Anwar further mentioned that Malaysia is committed to adjusting its policies to meet the evolving demands of the industry and attract continuous high-value investments.
