Transport Ministry to Review Senior Licence Proposal

Proposal for Senior Citizens’ Licence Renewal

SEPANG: The Ministry of Transport is set to assess a proposal that would require Malaysian citizens aged 65 and above to undergo competency and health evaluations before renewing their driving licences.

Transport Minister Anthony Loke expressed support for the idea but emphasized the need for thorough evaluation before making any decisions.

“We must carefully consider the proposal report. We won’t rush into implementing new requirements,” Loke said, speaking to the press after leading the National Logistics Task Force meeting on Monday (Nov 25).

Response to Growing Concerns Over Elderly Drivers

Loke’s comments came in response to questions about whether senior drivers should be subject to health and competency assessments before renewing their licences.

Earlier, reports surfaced highlighting an increase in road accidents involving elderly drivers, suggesting that stricter conditions for renewing licences could potentially address the issue.

Among the suggestions was the requirement for drivers aged 65 and above to pass a health and competency test before they are allowed to continue driving. This is in response to the fact that there is currently no age limit for driving in Malaysia.

Logistics Hub Development in Negeri Sembilan

In a separate announcement, Loke revealed that a location in Nilai, Negeri Sembilan, would be chosen for the development of the nation’s logistics hub.

“The state government of Negeri Sembilan is fully supportive of this initiative and is working on identifying suitable land for the project,” Loke said.

Additionally, he shared that the Malaysian Investment Development Authority had briefed the task force on new incentives to attract investments for the Smart Logistics Complex.

“These incentives, which include tax exemptions of up to 70%, were announced during the presentation of Budget 2025,” he concluded. – Bernama
