KOTA KINABALU: Villagers in Kampung Bilit, situated along the Kinabatangan River, were shocked to find the body of a man, believed to have been attacked by a crocodile, on Friday (Dec 27). The 40-year-old victim, identified as Masdi Sahar, was found approximately 1km from the site where his boat capsized.
Capsized Boat and Desperate Struggle for Survival
Masdi had been on a boat with three companions, transporting belian wood, when the vessel collided with an unknown object and began to sink. While three of the men were able to swim to safety, they heard Masdi’s cries for help, claiming he was being attacked by a crocodile. Despite their efforts, they were unable to reach him.
Search and Rescue Efforts
The Kinabatangan fire station was informed about the incident at 1:35 pm on Thursday, with emergency responders arriving at the scene an hour later. A joint rescue operation was launched, involving fire and rescue personnel, the police, wildlife rangers, and local villagers.
Investigation Underway
Masdi’s body was transferred to the police for further investigation. Early reports suggest he and a friend had been fishing when the incident occurred.
