PM Anwar say The Need for a Strong Digital Defense

PETALING JAYA: As cyber threats continue to evolve, protecting Malaysia’s digital ecosystem must be a joint effort involving the government, private sector, and the general public, says Prime Minister Datuk Seri PM Anwar Ibrahim. His senior press secretary, Tunku Nashrul Abaidah, confirmed that Anwar led the first National Cybersecurity Meeting on Tuesday (March 11), addressing key concerns related to digital security.

“The increasing complexity of cyber threats requires a robust cybersecurity infrastructure. This is not solely the government’s responsibility—businesses and individuals also have vital roles in maintaining digital safety,” he stated in a briefing shared on Anwar’s Facebook account.

Cybersecurity Law and Future Plans

The meeting assessed Malaysia’s cybersecurity landscape, noting a decline in cyber incidents from 2023 to 2024. Officials also discussed the Cyber Security Act 2024 (Act 854), which will be strengthened with the appointment of a national critical information infrastructure (NCII) chief and cybersecurity specialists. Additionally, the government plans to launch a “Cyber Games” initiative and organize an ASEAN cybercrime conference in May 2025, co-hosted by Nacsa, the Council of Europe, and Interpol.

Encouraging Expertise and Religious Unity

The government is inviting local cybersecurity professionals to collaborate in enhancing Malaysia’s digital security infrastructure. Meanwhile, Anwar also engaged with religious scholars from Kelantan at the PMO, discussing Islamic education, governance, and the importance of fostering unity in religious matters.
