Police Investigating Viral Video Allegedly Mocking Religious Ceremony
Police KUALA LUMPUR: Authorities have launched an investigation into a controversial video featuring DJs from Era FM, which is accused of ridiculing a religious ritual.
Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Razarudin Husain confirmed that six police reports have been filed regarding the matter.
Video Removed After Gaining Thousands of Views
“Our investigation found that the video has been removed. It had been viewed 95,400 times and shared by 204 users,” he stated on Tuesday (March 4).
Legal Consequences for Those Involved
The case falls under Section 298 of the Penal Code and Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act (CMA).
If found guilty under Section 298, the accused could face imprisonment of up to a year, a fine, or both. Meanwhile, under Section 233 of the CMA, penalties include a fine of up to RM50,000, a maximum jail term of one year, or both, with an additional RM1,000 fine for each continued day of offense after conviction.
Police Reports and Apology Issued
“One of the reports was lodged by a 44-year-old engineer who came across the video on Facebook, in which several radio station members were allegedly mocking Hindu practices,” Razarudin said.
He also mentioned that the DJs involved have since issued an apology on the official Era FM Facebook page.
