Nurqayyum Ends 18-Year Medal Drought in Diving

Malaysia’s Historic Moment in Rio

PETALING JAYA: Young Malaysian diver Nurqayyum Nazmi Mohd Nazim has made waves on the global stage, ending an 18-year medal drought for Malaysia at the World Junior Diving Championships.

A Stellar Bronze in the 3m Springboard

The 18-year-old clinched a bronze medal in the boy’s 3m springboard final (16-18 years) with a score of 506.75 points in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. China’s Yan Xin claimed the top spot with 546.60 points, while Norway’s Isak Borslien secured silver with 508.35 points.

Other Malaysian Performances

Malaysia’s other representative, Yong Rui Jie, finished 10th with 440.30 points.

A Promising Preliminaries Performance

Nurqayyum demonstrated his potential early, finishing second in the preliminaries with 479.30 points, just behind Yan Xin’s 524.85.

Malaysia’s Podium Comeback After 18 Years

This achievement marks Malaysia’s return to the podium since Bryan Nickson Lomas secured bronze in the boy’s 10m platform event (16-18 years) at the 2006 championship held in Kuala Lumpur. Bryan also won gold in the boy’s 3m springboard event at the 2004 edition in Belem, Brazil.
