New Zealand Senior Loses RM216,000 in Johor Online Scam

Victim Targeted by Online Fraud

JOHOR BARU: A 61-year-old New Zealand citizen fell victim to an online scam, losing RM216,000 to a fraudulent investment scheme. The victim reported the case on Nov 28, detailing how he was first approached on Oct 2 by a man claiming to be “Michael Wong.”

Investment Platform Promises High Returns

The scammer introduced the victim to the website https://m.worldcoinkk.com, promoting it as a reliable investment opportunity. Promising returns of 3% to 5% per month, Wong persuaded the victim to invest his savings. Over three weeks, from Oct 3 to Oct 25, the victim made 27 online transfers totaling RM216,000 to a bank account under SPB International Sdn. Bhd.

Scam Unveiled After Payment Demands

When Wong requested additional payments, the victim refused, prompting him to suspect foul play. Despite his substantial investment, the victim received no returns, losing his life savings accumulated over years of hard work.

Police Investigations Underway

Johor police are investigating the case under Section 420 of the Penal Code, which penalizes cheating with imprisonment of up to 10 years, caning, and fines. Authorities are also probing the potential involvement of “money mules.”

Authorities Warn Against Online Scams

ACP Balveer Singh has urged the public to exercise caution and thoroughly verify investment opportunities before transferring money. Resources like Semak Mule and the NSRC hotline (997) can help detect scams.
