Rising Numbers of Evacuees Across Malaysia

KUALA LUMPUR: The number of evacuees in eight states affected by floods continues to climb. As of 8 PM on Friday (Nov 29), 106,505 individuals are sheltering in temporary relief centres (PPS), with no changes reported in Perak.

Kelantan Bears the Brunt of the Floods

Kelantan is the hardest hit, reporting 72,360 victims housed in 261 PPS, a sharp rise from 65,993 earlier in the day. According to the Social Welfare Department’s Disaster Info Portal, Pasir Mas recorded the highest number, with 23,680 evacuees in 58 centres. Other affected districts include Tumpat (12,888 victims), Kota Bharu (10,095 victims), and Kuala Krai (5,606 victims). Major rivers like Sungai Lanas in Jeli and Sungai Kelantan in Kota Bharu have surpassed danger levels.

Terengganu’s Escalating Crisis

In Terengganu, evacuees increased to 24,754 by Friday night, with Besut contributing the majority at 11,842. Rising river levels in basins across the state have triggered further warnings.

Challenges Faced by Other States

Other states, including Kedah, Johor, and Selangor, also reported increasing victim numbers, with several PPS operating to accommodate them. Tragically, three deaths have been confirmed, two in Kelantan and one in Terengganu.
