Bail Denied Over Lack of Remorse
BUKIT MERTAJAM: A trailer driver accused of reckless driving, which led to the tragic death of a 21-year-old woman, was denied bail by a Magistrate’s Court due to his lack of remorse, according to the deputy public prosecutor.
Zulfadzly Hassan argued before magistrate Mohd Harith Mohd Mazlan that Marhizan Johari, 51, displayed inappropriate behavior, including a “peace” gesture when appearing in court for remand.
Viral Incident Sparks Public Outrage
Although the charge is bailable, Zulfadzly stressed that public outrage over viral accident footage warranted denying bail. Magistrate Mohd Harith agreed, denying bail and setting Jan 24 for the case’s next mention, pending postmortem and technical reports related to the incident.
Accused Pleads Not Guilty
Wearing a blue shirt and dark trousers, Marhizan appeared indifferent during yesterday’s proceedings. He pleaded not guilty to recklessly driving a trailer that caused Lee Zi Rou’s death on Nov 13 at Jalan Kebun Sireh in Bukit Mertajam.
Victim and Survivor Details
The victim, Lee, was a clerk on her way to work when a cargo container crushed her car. Another driver, 25-year-old Tan Chou Theng, was severely injured and remains hospitalized. Lee’s funeral on Sunday was attended by hundreds paying their respects.
