KKIA Expansion: A Boost for Sabah’s Economy

KOTA KINABALU: The Transport Ministry is taking significant steps to upgrade Kota Kinabalu International Airport (KKIA). Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim’s administration aims to enhance the airport’s capacity to support the growing tourism sector in Sabah.

Transport Minister Anthony Loke plans to seek Federal Cabinet approval for the upgrade. This project will increase the airport’s capacity from nine million to 12 million passengers annually. Expanding KKIA is crucial, as Sabah’s tourism sector greatly contributes to the local economy, attracting visitors with its stunning landscapes and diverse wildlife.

The proposed upgrades will improve airport facilities. These enhancements include an expanded terminal, more retail spaces, and better amenities. Travelers, both domestic and international, will enjoy a more comfortable experience. Loke emphasized that this development will benefit tourists and create jobs for local residents, boosting the economy.

Additionally, Loke noted that the expansion aligns with the government’s goals of improving infrastructure and increasing economic resilience. As the second-busiest international airport in Malaysia, enhancing KKIA’s capacity is essential to accommodate the growing number of visitors.

Construction for the expansion could start as early as next year, pending Cabinet approval. Loke’s commitment to this project shows the government’s dedication to supporting Sabah’s economic growth through strategic infrastructure investments.
